Betty Salathe

Betty Joyce Hancock Salathe. We celebrate the life and memories of Betty who departed her earthly life on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at 6:45 AM at the age of 83. She was born in New Orleans, LA, the oldest of eight siblings. Betty graduated high school in Fairhope, AL and then moved back to New Orleans where she married and started a family. She was a devoted homemaker until all seven of her children started school at which time she entered the workforce pursuing her lifelong love of sewing. Her career led her to Atlanta, GA and eventually to Homewood, AL where she opened her own business, Joy Drapes and Upholstery. She later moved to Gardendale, AL to be close to her daughter. Betty is survived by her loving sister, Lane Hancock Cowart (Jimmy) of Alpharetta, GA; her children Richard Salathe (Carmen) of Kenner, LA; Michael Salathe of Edenton, NC; Andrew Salathe of Birmingham, AL; Joel Salathe (Magdalena) of North Bend, OR; Dennis Salathe (April) of Valrico, FL; Eve Salathe Smith (Allen) of Gardendale, AL; and David Salathe of Hoover, AL. Her grandchildren include, Sherry Massicot (David) of River Ridge, LA; Stacey Salathe of Broken Arrow, OK; Leia Salathe of Tampa, FL; Christine Johnson (Richard) of Swansboro, NC; Stephanie Smith of Coronado Island, CA; John and Sandra Salathe of Washington, D.C.; Cori Pittard (Tim) of Chelsea, AL; Shannon and Scott Smith of Gardendale, AL; Madeline and Jacob Salathe of Hoover, AL; Elizabeth, Ethan and Julia Salathe, of North Bend, OR; and Isabell and Kevin Salathe of Kenner, LA. Her great-grandchildren are Mark Jr., Emily, Madelynn, Rhianne, Frankie, Alaina, Logan, Claire, Cooper, and two on the way. She had many nieces and nephews. Our family would like to thank Always There, Evercare Hospice, Dr. Mark Adams, and especially her best friend, Dorothy Knittel for all their love and support. Betty left her body to the Anatomical Donor Program at UAB in hopes of furthering medical research. There will be a visitation Monday, July, 8, 2013, between 6 PM and 7:30 PM with a memorial service to follow at 7:30 PM at The New Gardendale Funeral Home.
