James Douglas Guthrie

James Douglas Guthrie was born on November 6, 1958. He went to his heavenly home on August 13, 2025 at the age of 66 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents, David Earl Guthrie and Mary Louise Pharris Guthrie; grandparents, William Jefferson Guthrie and Viola Mae Collins Guthrie and Hal Pharris and Fannie Mae Geeters Pharris; father-in-law, Ray Whisonant and brother-in-law, Johnny Whisonant. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Darlene Whisonant Guthrie; sons, James Ryan (Tabitha), Kevin Douglas; daughter, Jessica Rhea; granddaughter, Tamryn Darlene; brothers, David Guthrie (Kelly); Joe Guthrie (Susan); sister, Lisa Simpson (Taylor); mother-in-law, Doris Whisonant and sister-in-law, Dena Tumlin (Ray); dear friend, Jerry Cannon and several nieces, nephews and close friends. James grew up attending Liberty Baptist Church and was a graduate of Mortimer Jordan High School Class of 1977. He retired from Alabama Power in January of 2023 after 46 years of service. In his spare time, he also worked at Off Road Connection. James spent his life in Warrior, Alabama. He and Darlene built their home from the ground up on his grandparents' home site. James served many roles for many people. He was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and a cherished friend. James was blessed with several talents. He had a gift and a passion for music and a skillful hand with cars. He always had a willingness to help others. He was a simple man with simple pleasures. A good day's work, playing the guitar, working with the pit crew, hunting, time at the lake, a good joke, a garden and time with family and friends was his joy in life. He was a quiet and straightforward man and the void he will leave in the lives of all who knew and loved him is vast. The impact and example he set during his days on earth will not be forgotten, but held in the hearts and memories of those who loved him. Funeral services to celebrate James' life will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at 11am at Gardendale Heritage Funeral Home, burial will follow in Liberty Minter Cemetery in Morris. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 from 5pm to 7pm at Gardendale Heritage Funeral Home.
