Faye A. Howard

On May 13, 2017, Faye Attaway Howard went to be with the Lord. Born September 26, 1940, she became a Christian very young and was faithful all of her life. She spent the last years of life attending services as her primary activity. Faye will be greatly missed by many Christian brothers and sisters, especially her brethren at the Gardendale Church of Christ where she was a faithful member of the assembly for many years. Faye was preceded in death by her mother, Lillian Attaway, father, Jake Clifford Attaway, Sr., and her brother, Jake Clifford Attaway, Jr. She is survived by her loving husband of over 53 years, Charles L. “Chuck” Howard, a loving sister, Helen Attaway McDuffee, and many other loving family members and friends. Faye was married to Chuck Howard on November 15, 1963. This November would have been their 54th anniversary. There is no measure of the grief that he suffers in her loss. They lived in many places together while in educational endeavors, military service and work. Faye graduated from Corner High School in 1958. She began work with the architectural firm of Charles H. McCauley Associates. She left the McCauley office in 1963 to be with Chuck at the University of Alabama, where in Tuscaloosa; she worked with the Cotton States Life Insurance company. In 1967, during the course of the Viet Nam war she moved to Monterey, California and worked for a real estate and insurance company while Chuck, then in the Air Force, attended the Defense Language Institute studying Chinese Mandarin. In 1968, she went to San Angelo, TX, for three months where she actually did not work and Chuck was stationed prior to being assigned overseas duty. Later in 1968, she went to the island of Okinawa to be with Chuck while he was assigned to the 6927th Security Group. Faye lived on Okinawa for sixteen months. She worked there for the Army at Fort Buckner. The island would later be turned back over to Japan but had a military governor at this time. She worked at Fort Buckner in the financial office for military entertainment and was responsible for the accounting of very large sums of money each week, which she undertook, as she had always done, with unusual ability, confidence, and a desire for total perfection. Faye returned to the United States in 1970 to Omaha, Nebraska, where Chuck was stationed at the Air Command headquarters. She worked there for the architectural firm of Leo A. Daly. Upon completion of Air Force service Chuck entered the University of Alabama Law School graduating in 1974. During this period Faye worked extensively for the United Way. She then moved to Birmingham and began work with the RT French Company. She worked at French’s for almost 10 years as assistant to the Division Manager. Their office managed operations in some or all of six southeastern states during which time she became known throughout the industry as one of the most efficient and capable administrators in the business. After French’s she worked for brokers who had known her at French’s and was recognized many times for her ability to handle all aspects of the business. She then entered her last job for CLA Architecture. The principal project of CLA was a digital hospital which was owned by HealthSouth. When HealthSouth fell she did not have a job with CLA anymore and effectively retired. One of the favorite activities of Faye was the making of jewelry and she enjoyed many hours in the jewelry aisles of Hobby Lobby looking for new pieces to use in making bracelets and necklaces. She didn’t sell jewelry but gave pieces to people when she saw something that matched that person. Faye had 2 major back surgeries and was left with two bars and six screws fastening L4, L5, and S1 together. She never complained but took the medication available and spent many fruitful years after these surgeries. She also had two hip nails. All of her life her first priority was always attendance at church, which she did almost to the end of her life. She was an encouragement to many and an example to all. There is no measure of the mark which she left upon all of the people she was associated with and most of all she was the most wonderful companion, helpmate and friend who ever touched me. She was my entire life for little remains of it if the time with her is removed. I am blessed to have known and loved her and she will always be with me. May God bless us all! Visitation will be Wednesday, May 17, 2017, between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel at The New Gardendale Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
