Elzie D. Self

Elzie D. Self, 93, of Empire, AL, passed away July 28, 2014 at Birmingham Nursing and Rehab Home of natural causes. Elzie was born June 16, 1921 in Majestic, AL. He was the son of Milton and Gertrude Self. Elzie was a WWII veteran, serving in Switzerland, France and Normandy. He was also a Mason and Deacon of Sandusky First Baptist Church and lived in Sandusky, AL for 62 years. He was married to Margaret Reno Self on July 26, 1943 in Birmingham, AL. He retired from U. S. Steel in Ensley, AL after 37 years of service. Margaret predeceased him on May 9, 2014, after 71 years of marriage. Elzie is survived by his children, Peggy Anoree Lowery, husband, Robert Lowery; Marilyn Sue Jones, husband, Steve Jones; Sheila Dianne Hasenfuss, husband, Ted Hasenfuss and Elzie Self, Jr.; grandchildren, Shannon Lowery Kerpics, Lonnie Jones, Marnee Jones Baker, Shawn Hasenfuss, Brandon Hasenfuss, Jody Jones, Chad Easterwood, Blake Hasenfuss, Ashlynn Self Hyche, and Elisha Self Budlong; Seventeen Great Grandchildren; Siblings, Danus Self, Kathrine Self Little, Bud Self, C. D. Self and many beloved Nieces and Nephews. He was predeceased by Siblings, R. C. Self and Don Wayne Self. Elzie loved all of his children and grandchildren. Some of his favorite things in life were to get down in the floor and play with them or give them pots and pans and march with them thru the house like a band. He was very witty and a great trickster. Elzie loved his God and his Church family. Everyone loved him and he was a great example of a dedicated Christian, Husband, Father, and Grandfather. Very Humble and loving man! Until he became unable to do so he was a diligent worker in many areas of his church. He delivered Meals on Wheels to people in his community that was home bound. He was blessed to have many Sitters for 5 years who loved and took great care of him. He was also taken care of by many professionals with Hope Hospice since March 2013. They all treated him like their family. In his final days, he resided at Birmingham Nursing Home and Rehab. Center where he was cared for by many caring Professionals. He was also assisted by Vistas Hospice. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 30, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at 12:30 p.m. at The New Gardendale Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Sandusky First Baptist Church. Arrangements by The New Gardendale Funeral Home.
