Chequita McCracken Wilson

Chequita McCracken Wilson, age 81, of Gardendale, Alabama, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on July 2, 2026. She was born on August 20, 1944, in Hamilton, Alabama. Chequita lived a life defined by unwavering faith, sacrificial love, and joyful service. A devoted Christian and faithful member of the Gardendale Church of Christ, she exemplified Christ in both word and deed. Her steadfast trust in God carried her through life’s joys and hardships, and even in the face of adversity, she never wavered in her belief in His promises. Her enduring faith became a legacy that continues to shine through her family. Education was both her calling and her ministry. During her distinguished career, Chequita faithfully served as a teacher, counselor, and administrator with the Jefferson County Board of Education and later as Dean at ITT Technical College, touching countless lives with her wisdom, encouragement, and compassionate heart. She believed deeply in the potential of every child and inspired generations of students, educators, and families. Chequita was preceded in death by her parents, Edward McCracken; Neal and Barbara Gravitt; her brother, Ronald McCracken; her beloved grandparents; and several cherished aunts and uncles. Above all, Chequita treasured her family. She was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Clarence Wilson, and a loving mother to Jennifer Burns (Daren), Amy Godwin (Troy), and Beth Wright (Randy). She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Mary Catherine Cleveland (Sam), Carter Burns (Katie), Parker Godwin (Lauren), Landon Wright (Chandler), Caroline Henry (Wallace), Connor Godwin (Morgan), Grace Wright (Andrew), and Taylor Renfrow (Grant). Her greatest delight in recent years was being “Great-Grandmother Mom” to Ellie Kate Cleveland, Emma Cleveland, Palmer Burns, Annie Godwin, Lucy Godwin, Baylor Burns, Walt Godwin, Maddox Henry, and William Godwin. Each child was a precious blessing, and she poured into them the same love and faith that had guided her own life. Chequita’s life was a beautiful testimony of grace, perseverance, and hope. She leaves behind a family strengthened by her example, countless friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness, and a community made better because she was part of it. Though her earthly journey has ended, her legacy of faith, love, and service lives on in the generations she influenced. Her family rejoices in the assurance that she has received the fulfillment of God’s eternal promise and now rests peacefully in His presence. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kristen Riley, neurosurgeon at UAB, for her exceptional care, compassion, and dedication throughout Chequita’s seven-year journey. Your expertise and kindness were a source of comfort and hope to both Chequita and her family. The family also extends their sincere appreciation to the physicians, nurses, and staff of the UAB Neuro Intensive Care Unit for the extraordinary care, compassion, and dignity they provided during her final days. Your professionalism, kindness, and support will never be forgotten. Services to honor Chequita’s life will be held on Monday, July 6, 2026 at 2pm at Gardendale Heritage Funeral Home; Jason Shackelford officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Monday from 12pm to 2pm.
