Bettie Marie Frock Doss

Bettie Marie Frock Doss, of Gardendale, age 91 died peacefully on Sunday, January 23, 2022 surrounded by her large, loving family following an extended illness from dementia. She is survived by her six children, Steve Doss, Clint (Cece) Doss, Ben (Sheila) Doss, Kelly (Carla) Doss, Mona (Vince) Caltagirone, Regina (Pete) Hontzas, 20 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and her sister-in-law Loretta Doss Morton. She is preceded in death by her parents, Clint and Doretta Frock, her sister Norma Morse and her beloved husband of 61 years, Raymond Doss. Born on April 6, 1930, during the Great Depression in Chaffee, Missouri, her family relocated when she was five-years-old, settling in the Acipco neighborhood in North Birmingham before later moving to Gardendale. In addition to being a stay-at-home mom, she was very active in her church, her community and working as the bookkeeper for her husband‘s business. She was outgoing, gregarious, and fun-loving, who never met a stranger and always had a warm smile and a friendly hug for anyone she met. She loved to travel, host parties and entertain her many family and friends. She was an adopted grandmother to all she met, and in her later years she became an avid prayer warrior. She kept a detailed and extensive prayer journal and diary listing all the people and their needs and would sit and pray for hours each morning. She was deeply devoted to her faith and developed a close, familiar relationship with the Lord, where she would sit and talk with him like her best friend. Her best trait was that her love for others was extremely genuine. When she told someone she loved them, she truly meant it. She was selfless and willingly made sacrifices to help, serve, or give to others. Grandma Bettie was the quintessential grandmother, who joyfully spent quality hours with her numerous grandchildren. She was an active listener and was genuinely interested in others and made them feel as if at that moment they were the most important person in her life, which is why all her children and grandchildren are convinced to this day that they are her favorite…and they are all correct, for her heart was big enough that everyone truly was her favorite person. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 334 Main St., Gardendale, AL with a visitation at 9:00 AM, funeral mass at 10:30 AM, followed by a graveside service at Oakwood Memorial Gardens, Heritage Funeral Home, Gardendale presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to a charity of your choice or engage in her favorite dining experience by visiting a Mexican restaurant and order a margarita to toast Miss Bettie on a beautiful life, well lived.
